The Johan Cruyff Foundation* supports sports
and recreation for children world-wide. Special attention is being paid to
children with a handicap. Practising sport encourages children to build up
social skills, learn how to deal with winning as well as losing and develop
tactics and strategy. As a result of this, children develop self-confidence and
a sense of achievement. But most of all: sports are fun!
To extract
this thought the Foundation subsidises city councils who build up sports areas
in their neighbourhoods for street children. In corporation with the KNVB
(Royal Dutch Football Association), the Cruyff Foundation organises tournaments
and events in these sports areas, the so called Cruyff Courts, in which
professional football players often participate.
Over the
past two years, 28 of these Cruyff Courts have been built. Mekon provided the
fencing, consisting of a 4 meter high ball stop fence with integrated goal on
the goal line and a 1 meter high railing fence with integrated swing gate on
the side line for the courts in the cities of Enschede, Nijmegen, Arnhem,
Deventer, Venlo and Kampen.
Also, The
Netherlands donated the public part of the building costs for six Cruyff Courts
to the Netherlands Antilles, one for each isle. The Courts on Aruba, Bonaire
and Cura็ao have been festively opened in November 2006 by Johan Cruyff and her
Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
